The magnificence of the Sydney Fig Tree is undeniable; from the wandering visible tree roots to the deep shaded canopy, its effects can be described as ‘other-worldly’. These two works – “The Song of the Fig Bird near the cool harbor water” and “The Call of the Flying Fox near the honey-scented Cloud Bush” are connected through the role of this tree in nourishing these unique flighted species. One can be seen during the day only and one arrives to feed on the tree’s fruit at dusk. Using psychedelic colours and form, and drawing on dreams and symbolism I have painted an emotive response to the tree and the species it lives with, and question my place in this ecology.
