Artist Statement 2024
Sydney based artist Paula Broom merges her BA(Hons) Fine Art from London’s Middlesex University with her Master of Environmental Management from University of New South Wales to explore the intersection of art, society and ecology.
Working in sculpture, installation and expanded photo media, often integrating fibre and needle work, her practice reflects her interest in preserving natural systems and species that coexist with us. She delves into interconnected ecological and social issues that impact our collective future, occasionally using her own body to examine personal, human and planetary health.
Her work has been exhibited both locally and overseas and appeared in several online publications. She has been a finalist for various awards, including the Head On and Australian Photography Awards. She is an executive member of the eco-arts collective the Tree Veneration Society, through which she runs creative community workshops. These encourage engagement with the natural world and underpin her belief that art contributes to a sense of wellbeing by connecting people and creating a strong sense of place and community.
